Hoarding – How to Let Go
I worked with a client yesterday who is a mild hoarder. I have changed her name to protect her identity. I will call her Samantha to protect her real identity.
Samantha is a wonderful accomplished woman who went through a major life tragedy 24 years back and coped with her loss by taking up shopping. I have met with Samantha and her husband 3 times previously as we downsized and then organized her kitchen, clothes closet, and master bathroom.

Samantha and her husband invited me in initially because they are going to remodel their Utah Valley home. Before they begin the remodel Samantha realized she needed to downsize her possessions. Last week Samantha decided she could donate 10 bags of used and brand new (never opened) items to Deseret Industries so others could benefit. Today we downsized the items in her home office and one basement room. Again another 10 bags of items to donate.
Letting things go is very hard for someone who has hoarding tendencies. I am so pleased I could offer Samantha the support she needed. I am very proud of Samantha and her will to change so she could move beyond being stuck and welcome a new way of living.

I should mention that I use alias names for my clients when I share their stories. They get to remain incognito!

Thanks for ones marvelous posting! I certainly enjoyed reading it, you could be a great author.I too am a mild hoarder. I have found that if I take a quick monthly inventory and then choose to box up 25 items it is very helpful to me so I can keep my home free of mounds of stuff. I want to encourage you to continue your great work helping people like myself.
