Tidy Up with Wall Organization!

As my culminating BYU internship work experience with Vicki Winterton and ORGANIZING Mind over Matter,  I was invited into the home of  one of Vicki’s clients to work alongside them on Mrs. R’s combination home office / craft room.   Mrs. R is a busy Mom located in Orem, UT.  Her office/craft room had become a catch-all for any item she had no designated spot for. She had a wall organization system in place but no idea how to categorize it so piles had taken over the room. Vicki met with her previously to ASSESS the space and CREATE a plan. This busy Mom of four had found the time to pull everything out of the room.  She’d sorted into three general categories the items that would go back into the room.

Vicki took on the big task of organizing the desk/office part of the room.  Mrs. R and I began going through all the cake decorating, crafts, sewing, gift wrapping, and scrap-booking supplies. I really struggled to see how all these crafting and hobby supplies could possibly fit within the wall organization unit already in place.

Mrs. R and I dove in.  First we SORTED everything into sub-categories.  We touched each item and put like items together.  As we did this we also PURGED and got rid of the unnecessary, unused, and multiple items.  We then placed items in clear storage CONTAINERS and LABELED what was in them.  Then we began the wall organization by categorizing the wall unit. My fear that there wouldn’t be enough room went away as we began putting items into smaller containers.  The amount of stuff seemed to magically shrink!  Everything had a home!

When we left five  hours after arrival, this sweet young mother had:

  1. a neatly organized desk area where she could sit and work
  2. an empty project table to assemble and work on her craft projects,
    and
  3. all her crafting supplies neatly stored away. It was so exciting to see the difference some training and a good wall organization system made to the craft space I was assigned to oversee.

My internship with Vicki has been a very positive experience. This week I became an experienced organizer. Next week I will be a college graduate. World, here I come! — Virginia Kestler

Just wished to make an effort to leave a comment in order to tell you I honestly appreciate this blog article. The before and after photos show that you know what you are talking about.

The idea of going up the wall never occured to me. Thanks!

Good points here. I have a very small bedroom and have placed wall shelving around the upper 1/3 of my available walls. It has made a great difference in the function of the room.
